Moralism

Moralism is the expression of principles of right and wrong behavior. It is making judgments about someone else's behavior and whether it is right or wrong. There is much debate about moralism because many people feel it is wrong to pass judgment on another's behavior or beliefs.

Originally, moralists were those who taught others about morals and moral problems. The term has now come to have a negative connotation. Moralism seems to be all around us. With the explosion of the media and Internet there are more and more people who are ready to give their opinions about how others live.

Moralism is sometimes thought of as wrong. Others may accuse someone of being moralistic. What they mean is that the person is acting judgmental and above others. Those who feel they are better than others often think that they can judge them. Moralism, however, can be applied to oneself. Each person has their own set of morals that they live by and believe in. You are responsible for your own behavior and your own thoughts.

Others who feel that they are giving us the right direction or path often impose moralism on us. In reality, morals are a very personal thing and cannot really be compared with others. Further, nobody is perfect and so, therefore, they can't impose their thoughts and beliefs on someone else.

When people impose their moralism on us we often tend to rebel or get angry. This is because we don't want others to judge our actions and tell us how to behave. Moralism has often been tied to the church because, many times, moral values are passed along to us through religion. Moralists often express their opinions openly and don't care what others think about them because they feel that they are always right.
